Project Management Training For PMPs

Article Date: 04/06/2011

Being a Project Management Professional or PMP requires Project Management training. It's not a sealed deal, but undergoing training will help you get through, especially if you don't have a formal education. After training, you need to get a certification, which Project Management Institute or PMI provides.

Training for a PMP certification is not only rigorous, but also very costly. But undergoing those may just be your financial salvation by the time you get a job because salary surveys state that project management professionals with certification average around $90,000 to $120,000 annually.

The exam, as many can attest, isn't easy. Even the above average individuals find it hard without the proper training. To start training for it, you need to allot time and energy.

Choose between training online and taking courses in accredited institutions offering the service. In today's world, taking online courses is more practical and just as effective as going to the institution, so whatever you choose would be fine. However, keep in mind that both methods will require you to pay for training.

Though costly, project management training will prepare you for the exam you need to take to become a certified PMP. The questions, the experience, and the mental preparations should be included in the training.

For the exam, you will need to meet certain requirements before you are allowed to take it. You need to have at least three years of experience as a PMP, including at least 4,500 hours of managing projects if you are a college graduate. If you only have a high school diploma, which is allowed, you need at least five years' experience and 7,500 hours of actually managing projects.

Another requirement is the classroom hours or training, which, as mentioned, you can get online or through institutions.

The actual exam costs $555 for non-PMI members and $405 for members. In the 200 multiple-choice questions, only 175 of those will be recorded, 25 will not be scored. You will need 60% rating or answer 106 correct questions in four hours.

It is said that PMP certification is one of the most intensive certifications available. It demonstrates advance knowledge and your expertise as a PMP. Getting a certification does not guarantee getting a job, but more and more companies require certification for their PMPs so it is better to be prepared.
